And now let's talk a little bit about the current meltdown that is taking the world: corona virus outbreak.
I get the huge unknown factors involving this pandemic that has sent chilling panic around the globe. I get that it is serious and it's not to be taken lightly and it takes serious measures from each one of us so it doesn't spread further.
And we're doing all those things: self-quarantine (I barely go anywhere or see anybody already anyway when I'm not traveling), self-distancing, constant hand washing and disinfecting of our living spaces, boosting our immune system (I prescribe myself a regime of green tea and tumeric a few servings a day).
I understand ALL that, however I'm probably more optimistic than most people. I feel somehow much of our response is an over-reaction (panic hoarding, empty shelves in grocery stores, lack of toilet paper).
Perspective is warranted, folks. And to give you perspective in 1918 Spanish Flu pandemic killed 50 million people and 1/3 of world population was infected.
Common flu has killed WAY more than this virus this year. More than 18,000 Americans have died from this season’s generic flu so far, according to the latest data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2018, the CDC estimated, there were 80,000 flu deaths.
That’s against 69 coronavirus deaths so far, from about 3,777 cases.
Worldwide, there have been about 6,516 coronavirus deaths, out of about 169,605 identified cases. Flu, by comparison, grimly reaps about 291,000 to 646,000 annually.
China is the origin of the virus and still accounts for over 80 percent of cases and deaths. But its cases peaked and began declining more than a month ago, according to data presented by the Canadian epidemiologist who spearheaded the World Health Organization’s coronavirus mission to China. Fewer than 200 new cases are reported daily, down from a peak of 4,000.
Subsequent countries will follow this same pattern, in what’s called Farr’s Law. First formulated in 1840 and ignored in every epidemic hysteria since, the law states that epidemics tend to rise and fall in a roughly symmetrical pattern or bell-shaped curve. AIDS, SARS, Ebola — they all followed that pattern. So does seasonal flu each year.
So , don't fall into the hysteria and some people will be angry at me for saying this as if I was telling you to spread the virus by being reckless which is not the case at all. I trust numbers more than opinions/theories and yes that after considering experts' opinions (which themselves aren't in complete agreement on how to treat this situation hence UK has a different policy, for example).
And getting overly stressed isn't going to help you boost your immune system either so stay calm and collected. Keep yourself abreast of latest development. I believe it the curve will peak (and don't panic when it happens), and start to decline the next 8 weeks and it'll be over by the summer hence the virus hates heat, humidity and ultra violet so have a lot of hot baths.
So yeah even though I keep observing day by day (or by the hour at this point) as uncertainty looms large at this time, as for now my
Ireland retreat April 14-18 still stands unless the airlines cancel our flights. We'll see what's going down by the end of the month if the curve is flattening or not.
